On 1 April 1986, the partnership of E.L. & C. Baillieu Stockbroking ceased trading and was succeeded by E.L. & C. Baillieu Limited, which subsequently changed its name to E.L. & C. Baillieu Stockbroking Ltd on 12 January 1998. In December 2002, E.L & C. Baillieu Stockbroking merged with Sydney stockbroker K.J Polkinghorne (established in 1945).
In October 2006, the firm entered into a Strategic Alliance with global investment bank, Credit Suisse. This arrangement will enhance Baillieu's offering to clients through access to corporate issues and equities research.
The founding Baillieu family has been active in Australian business for some 100 years and has been closely associated with the development of a number of companies prominent in the Australian business scene.
The family formed North Limited (previously North Broken Hill Ltd) in 1895 and was associated with the formation of the Carlton & United Breweries group, now the country's largest brewer. In 1909, Mr W.L. Baillieu, in association with Messrs W.S. Robinson, Frances Govett and the American mining engineer and future President, Herbert Hoover, formed a company to develop the de Bavay flotation process of extracting metals from crushed ore. The flotation system is now one of the major methods of treating mined ore to produce a concentrate for smelting. This process was vital for the continuing profitability of the Broken Hill ore bodies as it enabled zinc to be economically extracted. From this company, Amalgamated Zinc, came the Zinc Corporation, the forerunner of Rio Tinto Limited. North Limited and Amalgamated Zinc companies acquired the lead smelter at Port Pirie in 1915 and were associated with the formation of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia, now part of Pasminco Ltd. The firm was closely involved with establishment of Pacific Dunlop Limited, WMC Limited, Associated Pulp & Paper Mills (now a division of Amcor Ltd) and Alcoa of Australia.
